Mystic Oblivion — Chapter III: The Sleeping Ocean

Dawn on a restored sea. An expedition waits on the deck of a small craft — not conquerors, explorers. More people have walked on the Moon than have reached the bottom of the deepest trench. They know the power of the water. They go anyway.

You sink, and you control the sinking. The sunlight zone gives way to the twilight zone at two hundred metres, where the last blue light dies. Below a thousand metres there is no sunlight at all, ever. Most animals here make their own light, and where you move, they answer — blooms of cold blue-green following your body through the dark.

Deeper still, the pressure builds and the whale song from above arrives slowed and lowered. Something enormous passes without ever being seen.

On the floor: hydrothermal vents. Black mineral smoke, tube worms crowded around the heat. Nothing here has ever needed the sun — this life runs on chemistry. And spread across the seafloor, threaded through all of it, is a network so vast and so slow that it was mistaken for sleep. It was never asleep. It was listening slowly.

To speak to it you must hold still. Rushing does nothing. Only patience carries.

It answers without explaining. It shows five endings — ice, dead water, volcanic ruin, collapse, an impact — and after every one of them, green returning at the edge of the frame. It has outlived all five. It stayed awake through each.

You rise. The light comes back. Whales join the ascent, and the surface breaks into dawn.

The world has ended five times. Something always stayed awake.
